History
As one of the poorest regions in the world which also contains some of the most underdeveloped countries in any other region, Sub-Saharan Africa’s domestic matters were caused by a legacy of colonial rule, inter-ethnic conflict, and political strife. The intense levels of poverty led to most Sub-Saharan African citizens facing several consequences ranging from hunger to severe health issues and due to being an underdeveloped and poor region, medical issues pose a significant threat to the inhabitants. Aside from the epidemics and conflict happening in Sub-Saharan Africa, the region in some places is mostly land-based so many African countries often experience drought, this is because most of the areas in the continent are located at a longitude where the global air circulation system forms conditions in arid regions. Warfare often occurs in this region which then causes damage to not only urban infrastructure but also several other casualties. Additionally, due to its high-density population, Africa became one of the regions with the highest crime rate in the world. Resulting in various crimes such as domestic violence, kidnapping, rape, sexual harassment (which are mostly targeted towards women and children but can even occur to people of the same gender as the assaulter) becoming common in Sub-Saharan. Most importantly these are the crimes that were affected by humanitarian crises. Therefore, victims experience trauma as a byproduct of the several cases that happened. Relatively the most common measurements of psychological distress after in the middle of trauma are symptoms of post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Commonly reported symptoms of post-traumatic stress include difficulties in concentrating, irritability, disturbing thoughts, nightmares, and excessive vigilance. Looking at all of these conditions, overall sub-Saharan citizens require an emergency room as a means for their survival, such as a place for shelter, health services, and food intake in the midst of poverty formed a solution that is realized in architectural design. therefore the provision of common needs must be prioritized. This building is also designed to be used as a temporary shelter if there is a conflict or war conflict occurs again. For location selection, this building can be built in urban areas, or areas far from cities. The concept refers to traditional African buildings with a circular shape that gives the impression of comfort, and also protects like a fortress.

On the other hand, another reason for the selection of this form is how every spaces are oriented toward the center. If in under certain circumstances, the flexibility level of these rooms will be highly supportive for various activities. In addition, this circle has several spaces act as community service units which are divided into two entrances. The first entrance is a health facility that starts with an information center, then followed by medical treatment rooms which are divided by the severity of the issue. The second entrance is a psychology room that functions as a consultation and treatment room for mental health and is then followed by a food storage room, office room, and a meeting room. Aside from being an emergency unit, it could also be used for farming in the Inner Court, education facilities, and more importantly therapies at the same time. For instance, doing agricultural activities can help improve knowledge about the importance of farming in order to survive, for younger generation. Inner courtyard of the building acts as the center which few spaces focused on. Not only used for agricultural purposes, instead it can also be enjoyed as a garden with water elements that completes the whole landscape. The application of the site derived from an idea of a survival mechanism, one that has been around ever since the human being discovered agriculture. Judging from the history of agriculture that comes as a part of the history of human culture. Agriculture arises when a community is able to maintain food availability for itself, forces a group of people to settle down, therefore encouraging the emergence of civilization. There has been a change in the belief system, the development of life support tools, and also the arts due to the adoption of agricultural technology. Humans are accustomed to finding food sources in the wild. Agriculture developed independently in various places in the world, namely in China, Africa, Papua, India, and America. But how can the current society survive in difficult conditions? Such as the Ebola virus outbreak which happened around 2014-2016 in West Africa that was a looming threat ever since the virus was first discovered in 1976 The Ebola virus causes an acute and serious illness that is often fatal if left untreated. EVD first appeared in two simultaneous outbreaks, one of them is in Nzara, South Sudan, and Yambuku in the year of 1976. With this new virus, most people have to keep their distance from each other and secure themselves by staying at home. However many poor citizens are not treated and have difficulties in finding healthy food resources, which is then worsened by the rampant COVID-19. Therefore, several issues such as job loss or lockdown in every city and country make it harder to find food. Most people have to maintain their distance from each other and secure themselves by staying at home.

Material use of the building design

The design of houses in Africa adapted to its dangerous weather, resulting in the buildings being often built with thick walls as one of the responses to avoid the harsh sun radiation during the day and to fight cold air at night. Therefore, the use of clay is suitable for the wall construction of this building, which then functions as natural air insulation that can adjust the temperature in the room from outside temperatures, and more importantly help improve the conditions of the building and occupants. On the other hand, bamboo Vulgaris is another substance used in this building design and construction, mainly because it is a hollowed and lightweight material. The middle cavity part of the bamboo is a prominent characteristic which functions well as a bracer as well as strengthen the bamboo, and make commonly used elements serve as lighter structures and especially not rigid. It could also be referred to that, this substance has an elastic character to it and can hardly break. Moreover, bamboo has a structural strength of 30 megajoules equivalent to 30 million joules that are strong enough to withstand earthquakes. Hence, making bamboo as one of the most reliable materials. While the use of thatch can be found in the roofing material. Other materials such as iron elbow functions as a door handle are also used to frame in some of the room dividers. Cement, iron plate, and soil also contribute immensely to the floor construction. As a result of this, the choice of materials is triggered by the zero waste theory that can be seen from the selection of local materials and empowering local craftsmen.
